Sun City was the name of a census designated place in Southern California’s Riverside County before the community was absorbed by the city of Menifee. Sun City merged with the towns of Menifee and Quail Valley in late 2008 to become an officially recognized city, although the name Sun City continues to be associated with a master planned development for retirees. The senior community known as Sun City covers about four square miles, and has an estimated population of approximately eighteen thousand residents. This complex was constructed in the year 1960, partially in response to a growing tourist industry and a swelling population in nearby Riverside County cities. Sun City and Menifee are home to a number of different types of housing, including single family homes and condominiums. Sun City, which was originally designed by the Del Webb Company, continues to be a diverse and growing community despite its assimilation into Menifee.
The old boundaries of Sun City include the Menifee Valley Medical Center, which provides emergency medical care to much of the surrounding area. Sun City boasts an impressive selection of recreational opportunities, such as two public golf courses and twin recreation centers. These recreation centers offer tennis courts and swimming pools in addition to a vibrant social space. The area around old Sun City is home to a number of shops and restaurants, ranging from upscale boutiques and eateries to national retail chains and fast food. Most of the schools in the Sun City area are managed by the Menifee Union School District, although the region is also home to the Mount San Jacinto College Menifee Valley Campus.
