According to the California Association of Realtors® & Money Crashers, buyers of fixer uppers should conduct due diligence to avoid falling into a fixer upper money pit. Some individual signs that might warrant a call to a local expert who can asses the problem, offer solutions or give repair estimates:

·        Stuck Windows & Doors:  Can be a sign of moisture or that a house is settling due to age or structural shifting; both of which are problematic

·        Smell of Moisture: In addition to damage to a house, moisture can adversely affect a resident’s health

·        Sloping or Sagging Floors: Both indicate structural issues beyond aging; determine if framing, joists and/or subflooring need replacement

·        Historic Home Designation & Zoning Rules: Municipal rules & regulations could restrict certain improvements to the home & property

These are just a few of the signs that a fixer upper may be problematic.
