Two longtime desert events, the Tour de Palm Springs and the New Balance Half-Marathon, run consecutively on the weekend of Jan. 23-24.  The Tour de Palm Springs charity bike ride on Jan 23rd, with 25, 50 and 100 mile-routes, starts in Palm Springs while the New Balance Half Marathon  on Jan. 24, being held for the first time in Palm Desert, starts at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park.  Each are kicking off their 18th seasons here in the desert and both have grown tremendously, with up to 10,000 participants expected to hit the roads for both events.   

In addition, for those seeking a true fun run, you can kick off your New Year's running regimen with two road races to choose on Jan. 9,  one in Palm Springs and the other in Palm Desert.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival Red Carpet Run at 8 a.m. Jan. 9 offers both a 5K and 10K run/walk starting at the American Legion on North Belardo in Palm Springs.  Participants are encouraged to dress fashion forward, but all registered will receive a tutu and tiara or tuxedo shirt as a costume competition for all runners, walkers, strollers and canines are also part of the event.  In addition, all finishers are awarded an Oscar trophy, free photo downloads and goodie bags. Special trophies will be presented to the top male/female and top three in five-year age divisions through 85 and older. Trophies will also be presented to the top Hollywood costumes for adults, children and canines.

Also on Jan. 9, the Galen New Year's Resolution Color Run 5K is set for Palm Desert at the Palm Springs Art Museum Palm Desert location.  Runners, walkers and dogs of all skill level welcome.  Each participant receives a T-shirt and dogs receive a bandana.  Color stations throughout the course for this community-wide, family-friendly fundraising event.
