This Palm Springs Life Magazine article takes a look at a remodel of a 1970s vintage, three bedroom, two bath residence located in the Deepwell Ranch community in Palm Springs. There is a perception sometimes that to create a home with a seamless sense of indoor/outdoor living you need to have a fairly large outdoor space. This property has a small backyard that Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper of H3K Design were able to transform into a usable space that includes fruit trees, an outdoor grilling and dining area, a lounge area, outdoor shower retreat, and a raised-edge swimming pool and spa.
To solve peoples’ fear of falling into a pool if standing too close to the edge, the designers resorted (pardon the pun) to a raised pool with an 18-inch “bench” around it. Other objects on the owner’s checklist: an outdoor shower; an expanded master bathroom from interior to exterior; very cleanable surfaces in the inside of the home that didn’t show dust or dirt (for example, the master shower is open and doesn’t have any glass); light gray as the house’s base color with only a few darker accent walls; and a cozy media room with a large sofa for unwinding and relaxing.
