The article starts with a stop at The Purple Room, where the author notes that there’s a fine line between charm and cheese, but that singer Michael Holmes has just enough of the former to get away with the latter while performing some of The Chairman of the Board’s songs.
The author then takes a tour of Sinatra’s home, Twin Palms, designed by famed local architect, E. Stewart Williams. Although Sinatra felt a Georgian-style mansion was the kind of statement he wished to make, apparently Williams thankfully dissuaded him, and came up with something more desert-appropriate, a classic in the style now known as mid-century modern, with a piano shaped pool. The author claims that Twin Palms witnessed some of Sinatra’s stormiest times. He moved into it with his first wife Nancy Barbato but Nancy was soon supplanted by Ava Gardner. Apparently, there’s a crack in one of the wash basins in the master bedroom from when Sinatra threw a champagne bottle at Ava during one of their many rows.
The author concludes with a homes-of-the-rich-and-famous bus tour, taking in the home where Dean Martin and his wife Jeanne used to live (before she caught him with his mistress, Jeanie), the love nest of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, the piano-shaped mail box on the house of Liberace and the home where Alan Ladd committed suicide.
