The Detroit Free Press’ Kathy Kieliszewski takes a look at some local Palm Springs area landmarks that let you travel back in time, without a Wayback Machine, a DeLorean or even an old school HG Wells' time machine.
For a sneak peek at the 1920s, she suggests visiting the former Colonial House, a former gambling club, speakeasy and brothel, now known as the Colony Palms Hotel. For the 1930s, she suggests reconnecting with the Tiki Cluture, the American idea of a Polynesian style of food and drink, that was born in Hollywood with the Don the Beachcomber restaurant and bar, Polynesian-inspired décor and rum drinks like Mai Tais, Zombies and Navy Grogs, with a stop at the Bootlegger Tiki Bar. The 1940s? How about paying homage to the hay days of Western movies with a trail ride at Smoke Tree Stables. For the 1950s, she suggests exploring Palm Springs area’s Midcentury Modern architecture by renting a Midcentury Modern home for a vacation, stopping by the Ace Hotel & Swim Club or coming to Palm Springs in mid-February for Modernism Week (Feb. 11th-16th). And for the 1960s, well, that was when the Rat Pack played and stayed in Palm Springs. So she proposes that you consider renting Frank Sinatra’s Rancho Mirage compound, Twin Palms or, for something a little more reasonable, visiting Melvyn’s Restaurant, where Frank Sinatra and friends would drink stiff drinks and eat large steaks served by waiters in tuxedos.
