The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Oak View Group (OVG) have announced their plans to partner in building a privately funded 10,0000 seat arena in downtown Palm Springs. Live Nation Entertainment, the world’s leading live entertainment company, has signed on as a strategic partner to supply the new arena with top touring artists and live entertainment. In addition, NHL Seattle, led by owner David Bonderman and OVG, have submitted an application for the 32nd AHL Franchise expansion team.
The Agua Caliente Band of Indians is a federally recognized Indian tribe located in Palm Springs with 31,500 acres of reservation land spread across Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and into the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains. The tribe owns Tahquitz and Indian Canyons recreational areas and operates two 18-hole golf courses and the Agua Caliente Casino Resorts, which includes the Agua Caliente Casino Palm Springs and Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage.
OVG is a global sports and entertainment company founded by Tim Leiweke (former President of Live Nation Entertainment, the world’s leading live entertainment company) and Irving Azoff (Chairman of Full Stop Management and Azoff MSG Entertainment). OVG is leading and financing the $900 million-plus renovation of Seattle’s KeyArena that will serve as home to Seattle’s NHL team. In addition, OVG has announced the development of venues in Belmont Park in Elmont New York, the University of Texas in Austin and the new Winter Olympics 2026 venue in Milan, Italy.
The new arena will be located on 16 acres of tribal land between East Alejo Road on the north; East Amado Road on the south; Calle El Segundo on the east; and Calle Encilia on the west. The arena will be more than 300,000 square feet, with 10,000 seats or more, and will be used for conventions, large meetings, international events, award shows, exhibitions and of course hockey. Groundbreaking and construction are scheduled for February 2020 with the opening scheduled for the fall 2021.
