In their recent Architectural Digest article, author Alicia Brunker and photographer Winnie Au take a look at interior designer Jonathon Adler’s recent renovation of the ultraluxe 1950s-era hideaway, the Parker Palm Springs. Adler, who is best known for combining glamorous materials with eccentric designs in his pottery, sculpture, furniture, and lighting, first made his mark on the desert retreat a little over a decade ago, helping put Palm Springs back on the map as the chic weekend getaway for the Beverly Hills set. The author feels that Adler’s recent refresh gives the Parker Palm Springs a cheeky, contemporary update while maintaining its historical soul.
From new additions, such as a seven-foot-tall, 900 pound bronze banana sculpture located on the hotel’s main lawn, that took Adler over 9 months to complete, to more subtle details, like a trippy carpet design, inspired by the flooring in the hallway of the Overlook Hotel in the film The Shining, on the lobby stairway, Adler was careful to keep the soul of the Parker Palm Springs alive while also infusing the property with his signature whimsy.
Nothing speaks to the hotel's spirit more than the iconic Gene Autry Residence, the two-bedroom villa where the cowboy country singer once resided. The suite features a brand-new dining room with furniture sourced from Adler’s eponymous line, including a burled Mappa wood table paired with bright orange wool and brass chairs and a hand-loomed chevron-print rug. As the year unfolds, more Jonathan Adler designs will be unveiled, like the opening of the hidden wine-bar Counter Reformation, decked out in brass, mirrors, and patterned cement tiles.
