Right from the horse’s mouth, Prime sets out what movies and shows are coming in November. To start, Michael Hewitt, the former television critic for the Orange County (CA) Register and a lifelong movie buff and TV addict shares his top 10 picks from the new movies and shows coming to Prime in November. Here are Michael’s top 10 picks:

1.                   Homecoming, Season 1 - November 2: Homecoming is a mind-bending psychological thriller from director Sam Esmail (creator of Mr. Robot) and starring Julia Roberts. (TV-14)

2.            Patriot, Season 2 - November 9: Think Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan turned inside out and upside down. The Prime Original series is a dark comedy about a spy who has gone undercover as an industrial pipe salesman. Michael Dorman stars as the put-upon operative. Terry O'Quinn is his father and has given him a new mission to assassinate a country's presidential candidate. (TV-MA)

3.            21 - November 1: A group of college math whizzes heads to Las Vegas to put their brains to work at the blackjack tables. Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth lead the group of card-counters hoping to amass a fortune before casino security catches on. (PG-13)

4.            Loving Pablo - November 21: The affair between Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and journalist Virginia Vallejo was passionate, turbulent — and ultimately led to his downfall. Real-life couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz play the lovers, in a story based on Vallejo's memoir. (R)

5.            Wonder - November 2: The whole family will enjoy this story of an 11-year-old boy with a disfiguring medical condition who enters school for the first time. Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts play the parents in the adaption of the bestselling novel. Variety called it "a very tasteful heart-tugger." (PG)

6.            Downsizing - November 24: Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig stars as a couple who learn they can live like rich people — if they let themselves be shrunk to 5 inches tall. Alexander Payne wrote and directed this social satire, which offers both belly laughs and thought-provoking commentary on modern society. (R)

7.            Kung Fu Panda: Paws of Destiny, Season 1 - November 16: In this new Prime Original series, Dragon Master Po returns, and this time the food-loving, wise-cracking panda must help four youngsters unlock their Kung Fu skills to protect their chi from an ancient evil.

8.            The Gymkhana Files - November 16: The eye-popping stunts performed by driver Ken Block in his Gymkhana videos have become an internet sensation. Gymkhana is a sport that asks drivers to maneuver cars around obstacles at high speed, but Block has elevated it to an art form. This Prime Original series takes us behind the scenes as Block and his team of Hoonigans attempt to make the greatest automotive video of all time. (TV-MA)

9.            The Expanse, Season 3 - November 15: Set hundreds of years in the future, The Expanse combines science fiction with tense political drama. Humans have colonized the solar system, but tensions have risen between Earth and the colonies. The Expanse has been compared favorably to Battlestar Galactica. (TV-14)

10.          It's a Wonderful Life - November 1: This quintessential Christmas movie stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a man who feels his life has been meaningless. A bumbling angel arrives from heaven to show George just how wrong he is. (PG)

The Desert Sun’s Melissa Daniels recently provided an update on the status of the 4 surf parks under development in the Desert. While coronavirus pandemic related concerns have caused some financing delays and moved planned opening dates into 2022, all of the projects are proceeding. Some highlights:

Thermal Beach Club

Current plans for the Thermal Beach Club call for up to 326 luxury homes built around a 20 acre surf lagoon. Access to the lagoon and surfing activities will be exclusive to residents and their guests. The development would be built on about 5% of the approximately 2,200-acre Kohl Ranch on Avenue 66, which also includes the Desert Mirage school complex, the 400-acre Thermal Motor Sports facility and the BMW Performance Driving Center. The ranch is a neighborhood-sized development of property owned by the real estate arm of the Kohl family, founders of the Kohl department store chain.

The Riverside County Planning Commission signed off on Thermal Beach Club last fall, but plans stalled when the Riverside County Board of Supervisors deferred a vote on approval amid resident concerns over affordable housing. With developers making new commitments to support affordable housing, the project will be back in front of the supervisors on Oct. 27. If approved, the next step for the project would be obtaining building permits. After that, construction is estimated to be about 24 months, with an opening sometime in 2023. 

Coral Mountain Surf Ranch

About 15 miles west of the Thermal Beach Club, a 16-acre wave pool with technology from surfing legend Kelly Slater is proposed for the Coral Mountain development in La Quinta. Plans call for up to 600 homes and a 150-room hotel. Like Thermal Beach Club, Coral Mountain will be private, but it will have a hotel to cater to travelers. The developers are nearing the end of their application process with the city and hope to have public hearings in the beginning of 2021, with the goal of having the first round of guests in 2023. 

DSRT Surf

The Palm Desert city council signed off on plans for DSRT Surf in November. Plans call for a 5.5-acre wave lagoon, up to two hotels and up to 88 residential villas on the 15-acre property, located near the Desert Willow Golf Resort. Developers Desert Wave Ventures LLC plan on submitting final plans to the city for approval in the next four to six weeks, closing on the land early next year, beginning construction after that and opening in 2023.

Palm Springs Surf Club 

The Palm Springs Planning Commission last October approved the Palm Springs Surf Club at the shuttered Wet 'N' Wild waterpark on Gene Autry Trail. Unlike the other projects, the Palm Springs Surf Club doesn't have a residential component and will be open to the public. The developers have outfitted an existing pool with wave-making technology to provide a proof of concept to investors. Completion of the $50 million project, including a 3 million-gallon pool wave pool, has been pushed back to 2022. Other amenities at the park when completed will include a lazy river and onsite restaurant.

Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Spa HyTides Water Plunge Water Park & Desert Twist Lazy River

These 4 surf parks follow on the heals of the recent opening of the $8 million HyTides Plunge Water Park and Desert Twist Lazy River at the Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Spa. This water park features HyTides Plunge, a set of 30-foot dueling waterslides, a 450-foot lazy river and a splash pad filled with dumping buckets, water cannons and more. The water park is in addition to the resort’s seven pools.

The Desert Sun’s Melissa Daniels reports that Palm Springs’ iconic Kaufmann House is on the market. Designed by famed architect Richard Neutra for department store tycoon Edgar Kaufmann in 1946, the home was made famous by Julius Schulman’s 1947 photographs and by serving as the backdrop for Slim Aarons' 1970 "Poolside Gossip" photograph. Edgar Kaufmann is also remembered for having commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his famous southwestern Pennsylvania vacation home, Fallingwater.  

The 3,162 square foot, 5 bedroom, 6 bathroom Kaufmann House has quite a history. After Edgar Kaufmann died in 1955, it had a number of different owners, including Barry Manilow and San Diego Chargers owner Eugene V. Klein. Renovations to the home, included enclosing a patio, adding floral wallpaper to the bedrooms, removing a wall for the addition of a media room and altering the roof lines in order to add air conditioning units. Couple Brent Harris and Beth Edwards Harris purchased the home in 1992 for $1.5 million and then set out to restore it to its original design.

It proved to be a daunting task since Neutra had died in 1970 and the original plans were not available. So the Harrises brought in Los Angeles architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner to restore the design. For clues on original design, the Harrises scoured the extensive Neutra archives at UCLA, found additional related documents through Columbia University and were able to work with Shulman to access some of his never-printed photos of the home's interior. For the restoration work itself, they obtained pieces from the original suppliers of paint and fixtures, purchased a metal-crimping machine to reproduce the sheet-metal fascia that lined the roof and even had a long-closed section of a Utah quarry reopened to mine matching stone to replace what had been removed or damaged. To help restore the desert buffer Neutra had envisioned for the house, the Harrises also bought several adjoining plots of land to more than double the land around the home to roughly 94,260 square feet. The couple also rebuilt a pool house that serves as a viewing pavilion for the main house and kept a tennis court that was built on a parcel added to the original Kaufmann property.

The home was sold at auction by Christies in May 2008 for $15 million. The sale later fell through. The home is back on the market as of October 16th with a listing price of $25 million that would set a record for Palm Springs residential real estate. In comparison, the Bob Hope house, designed by John Lautner, sold for $13 million in 2016 and Lautner's Arthur Elrod house sold for $7.7 million also in 2016. The highest priced sale on record in the Coachella Valley was Larry Ellison's purchase of the Porcupine Creek estate in Rancho Mirage, complete with its own 18-hole golf course, for $42.9 million in 2011.

We recently had the pleasure of working with Dave and Kaylon to sell their central Palm Desert home, using a marketing plan that we developed which includes the use of professional photography, Matterport virtual tour, video and targeted internet and social media marketing. The Desert Sun’s Melissa Daniels reports that Southwest Airlines will offer flights between Palm Springs International Airport and Oakland, Phoenix and Denver beginning November 15th. Routes and pricing are as follows:  

•         One-way nonstop between Palm Springs and Oakland (twice daily in each direction), as low as $49
•         One-way nonstop between Palm Springs and Phoenix (three times daily in each direction), as low as $49
•         One-way nonstop between Palm Springs and Denver (once daily in each direction), as low as $79 

The new flights are welcomed since Coachella Valley tourism officials are looking to boost fall leisure travel as business conventions and large-scale meetings are prohibited in California for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated the region has had more than 400,000 room nights canceled in 2020, leading to a loss of $172 million in room revenue. They also estimated that over 26,000 hospitality workers or roughly half of all the hospitality workers in the Coachella Valley are unemployed. 

Statewide, the Visit California tourism marketing agency has allocated $65.3 million to spend on marketing programs through June 30 of next year to entice travelers to come to California. But consumer sentiment on travel is still mixed: Tourism market research firm Destination Analysts found in an Oct. 4 survey that 56.5% of U.S. travelers are in a “ready to travel” state of mind. However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still advises against traveling, noting that staying home is the best way to prevent the virus' spread. As safety precautions, Southwest officials say they're keeping middle seats open through Nov. 30 to help ensure physical distancing on their flights and that its passengers are also required to wear face coverings.
