Cathedral City is the second largest population center of the Coachella Valley. Cathedral City, which is located in Riverside County bordering Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs, has a population of just over fifty one thousand residents. Cathedral City takes its name from Cathedral Canyon, and covers a total area of about twenty two square miles. The community, which is sometimes known as Cat City, is currently governed by fourth term mayor Kathleen DeRosa. Cathedral City was first heavily populated in the 1920s, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1981. Since then, the community has grown rapidly, surpassing all other Coachella Valley cities in the number of residents except for Indio. Cathedral City has its own IMAX movie theater, as well as a revitalized City Hall and a number of new shops and restaurants. There are a number of sports and recreational facilities in Cathedral City, such as Cathedral City Soccer Park and the Big League Dreams Sports Park, which host soccer and softball games, respectively.
The scenery and setting of Cathedral City are ideal for golf enthusiasts, who can enjoy courses such as the Date Palm Country Club, which was the long time home of the Phil Harris Golf Classic. Interestingly, Cathedral City’s Forest Lawn-Cathedral City Cemetery and Desert Memorial Park are home to a wide variety of celebrity tombs, such as those of Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rogers, and George Montgomery. Cathedral City’s large Latino population presents the annual Mexican Independence Day Festival every September, which includes Mexican food and drink as well as musical performances and cultural events. There are an impressive number of resort facilities throughout Cathedral City, which are a cornerstone of the local economy.
