The Desert Sun’s Xochitl Pena takes a look at some ways to spend Cinco de Mayo here in the Coachella Valley. For history buffs, Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France at the 1862 Battle of Puebla. Today, Cinco de Mayo is great opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage. Here are Xochitl’s 7 picks:

 

1. Tequila & Taco Fiesta

Several Old Town La Quinta restaurants, including Solano’s West Coast Bistro, The Grill on Main, Old Town Tavern Barbecue & More and Stuft Pizza, are participating in the Tequila & Taco Fiesta from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, May 5th. Each restaurant will provide a different $5 tequila and food tasting and there will also be Mariachi music on Main Street and an outdoor beer and wine garden. 2. All Day Fiesta

The Draughtsman in Palm Springs will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with south of the border food favorites and live entertainment all day from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, May 5th. A taco cart will be there serving up $3 carne asada, pollo and veggie tacos. 3. Jackie Cochrane Air Show

The Jacqueline Cochran Air Show runs from 9 am to 3 pm Saturday, May 5th, with aerobatics, high-flying aviators, static displays, food trucks, merchandise and much more. Free admission and parking. 4. Cinco de Saguaro

The Saguaro Hotel’s Cinco de Mayo party features a pool party with up and coming young women DJ’s providing music from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5th. DJ Erickavee performs first from noon to 3 p.m. followed by DJ Gene from 3 to 6 p.m. Free with RSVP by 1 p.m. Saturday. $20 for entry after 1 p.m. and $25 for walk-up entry with no RSVP.  Saguaro, 1800 E. 5. Spotlight 29

Nacho “Nash” Bustillos, who recently released a new single “El Juguete,” will headline at 8 p.m. on Saturday. 6. Tachevah at the Indio Block Party

Listen to four great bands compete for a grand prize of $3,000 Saturday in downtown Indio at Smurr Street and Miles Avenue. This free event will feature food, drinks, a car show, art, kids zone and much more. The block party kicks off at 4 p.m. with the music competition starting at 7 p.m. The competing bands include Eevaan Tre, Giselle Woo & The Night Owls, Razor J and Victor Bosc. 7. The River at Rancho Mirage
