With June fast approaching, with the help of our local visitor and convention bureau, Visit Greater Palm Springs, we’ve pulled together a list of events happening here in the Coachella Valley in June. Here it is:
CELEBRATION FOR MARILYN MONROE’S BIRTHDAY | June 1 at 6:15pm | Forever Marilyn Statute, Downtown Palm Springs Park
Marilyn’s birthday bash begins at 6:15 pm with 500 red velvet cupcakes with pink frosting shared with attendees (while supplies last). Then, at 7:00 p.m., the featured act at the Rock the Park Concert, Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Mirage, will sing Happy Birthday to Marilyn and invite the public to join in. As the sun sets, a special pink light will shine on Forever Marilyn so that those who come out for the celebration will be able to take photos with her lit up pretty in pink for her birthday. Forever Marilyn will glow in the pink spotlight for one night only on June 1st, for what would have been her 96th birthday. ROCK THE PARK | June 1 from 7 to 8:30pm | Palm Springs Downtown Park
Enjoy Fleetwood Mac tribute band Mirage, at Rock The Park, the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce’s series of free, monthly tribute band concerts at the new Palm Springs Downtown Park. The concert series is FREE and open to everyone. Bring your beach chairs and blankets and enjoy live entertainment in this beautiful new downtown park. 28TH PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORTFEST | June 21 – 27 Various Times | Palm Springs Cultural Center, Camelot Theatre
The Palm Springs International ShortFest returns with in-person screenings at the Camelot Theatres (Palm Springs Cultural Center) from June 21-27. ShortFest Forum will return with classes and panels featuring industry representatives, filmmakers and additional guests. Awards and cash prizes worth $25,000, including five Academy Award-qualifying awards, will be announced on Sunday, June 26. The Best of the Fest shorts will screen on the final day, Monday, June 27. CRIMES OF THE HEART | June 22 – July 3 Various Times | Desert Rose Playhouse, Palm Springs
The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. In the end the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future, but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.
